Mahmoud’s Journey: Climate Action from Tunisia to the World
06/21/2025
At just 24 years old, Mahmoud Sassi, a climate activist and social entrepreneur from Tunisia, North Africa, is already making a significant impact. While he is in the midst of completing his graduation project, an innovative hydroponic farming monitor developed in collaboration with the Microelectronics and Nanotechnology Research Center in Sousse, Tunisia, he's also shaping the digital face of Climate Cardinals as the Co-Director of Instagram.
His history with Climate Cardinals began at the Youth4Climate 2023 flagship event, an annual in-person gathering of young climate leaders from around the world, co-hosted by the Italian Government and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). It was at this event that Mahmoud met Hikaru Hayakawa, our Executive Director, and was instantly drawn to the organization's mission and drive. With a strong passion for marketing and storytelling, this sparked a unique opportunity to bring together communication skills with an urgent need to make climate information more accessible.
As the Co-Director of Instagram, Mahmoud has been at the forefront of leading several major initiatives that have elevated the organization's impact. From working directly with Google's team to announce Climate Cardinals as one of the first youth-led recipients of Google.org funding to launching our Instagram Reel series and helping launch Climate Calling – a platform under Climate Cardinals that connects youth with climate opportunities – his work has been nothing short of transformative and impactful. Mahmoud has also spearheaded the strategy behind the organization's first-ever Giving Tuesday campaign to support the work at Climate Cardinals and is furthering his efforts by collaborating with UNESCO YouCan's social media team, continuing to build Climate Cardinals' online presence, and highlighting the global narrative for climate action, innovation, and inclusion.
For Mahmoud, this is only the beginning. Mahmoud's creativity, drive, and collaborative efforts are helping shape a future where borders should not limit climate education but rather make it accessible, engaging, and global. His work shows that no matter how big or small each project and post can become, change can happen anywhere and doesn't require waiting for the perfect moment. It can occur when you utilize the tools you have to make an impact that resonates globally.
